David Morck

September 10, 1958 — October 14, 2023

David Carl Morck, 65, passed peacefully at home on October 14th, bringing an end to a lifelong journey filled with adventure, awe, and love. Packing his patience, passion, humor, and creativity, Dave brought his family, friends, colleagues, and every new person he happened to meet that day along for the ride. He was a master at finding the beauty in every single day and was determined to make life more joyful for those around him. Good conversation was one of his favorite ways to do this. He loved to talk - and he was a great listener. Whether discussing his kids, coaching soccer, planning out what to prepare for the next holiday feast, his watercolors, his latest hike with Joey Joe, architecture, or the design process, he was always totally engaged and willing to push the boundaries.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents Darwin and Dorothea Morck. He is survived by his wife, Jean, daughter, Kaia (Kevin) Van Patten, and son, Ture (Caroline Walz); sisters Martha (George) Audley, Barbara, and Margaret (LeRoy) Yell; numerous Kinney out-laws; many relatives; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews who are going to miss him dearly. He so loved being a part of a big, crazy extended family and all the chaos that ensues. Dave is also survived by great, supportive friends in The Commune, Winnipeg, Sweden, Duluth, WBL, and NSP; last, but certainly not least, are his excellent colleagues from MCL, Berg, BKV, NumberTen, KWA, and LSDR. How he loved his work.

Dave’s family would like to extend our deep gratitude to MN Oncology, Mayo Clinic, and Allina Hospice schedulers, nurses, PA’s, and doctors for their incredible expertise and compassion. Thank you.
We will be gathering to celebrate Dave at the History & Heritage Center located on the MN State Fairgrounds on November 11, 2023, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m., with a short program at 2:00.

The Lake Superior Design Retreat (LSDR) began more than 30 years ago and David Morck has long contributed to its success through his service on the LSDR Committee. The retreat is an annual gathering in Duluth that is dedicated to exploring design ideas and creative processes that push boundaries in the worlds of architecture, planning, engineering, literature, craft, dance, music, the fine arts, the environment, and more.

The Morck family is asking that memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, take the form of supporting the LSDR program by contributing to its scholarship fund. AIA Northern Minnesota provides scholarships each year to off-set costs related to the retreat so that more people of various ages, incomes, and geographies are able to attend.

Legacy gifts can be made directly to AIA Northern Minnesota and mailed to 105 5th Ave S. Ste. 485, Minneapolis, MN 55401. Please indicate “LSDR legacy gift”  to assist processing.
