Edmund Au-Yeung

1941 — 2024

Dr. Edmund "Ed" Au-Yeung passed away peacefully on November 5th in Minneapolis, MN, due to complications associated with Parkinson's disease. He was 83 years old. Dr. Au-Yeung was the youngest of five children, born in Hong Kong during a time in WWII when the Japanese occupied the island. A story from Edmund's first years says that his mother hid jewelry in his diaper to safeguard them from the Japanese general who took over their home.

From that auspicious beginning, Edmund continued on to schooling at the Jesuit WahYan College of Hong Kong, earning high marks on his O-levels within the British schooling system. He graduated from the University of Hong Kong, Faculty of Medicine, and pursued his medical career as an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Specialist in the US. Edmund became an intern at the Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago, and then did his residency at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. He became a Board-Certified Otorhinolaryngologist and completed his Medical Fellowship with New York University in Manhattan.

In 1973, Edmund and his then-wife Laura moved to Waterloo, Iowa where they became members of St. Edwards Church and raised their three children. He was one of four ENTs serving the Waterloo and Cedar Falls area. The family was often approached by former patients with kind stories of our father as a doctor. Edmund was interested in traveling around the world to spectacular sites. Highlights of his travels include hiking the Milford Trail in New Zealand, visiting the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza in Mexico, and touring Machu Pichu in Peru. When at home, he could often be found playing golf.

After retirement, Edmund enjoyed the companionship of his best friend, Ginger Herndon, for nearly twenty years. He was a Master-Level Bridge player and traveled to compete. Edmund was also an avid reader and liked to watch movies. He enjoyed being a part of the Landmark Commons community in Waterloo.

Edmund is preceded in death by his parents, older brothers and one older sister. He is survived by his sister Lillian Cheung of Sydney, Australia; his three children Kristine Chan-Lizardo (Laurent Cilia) of Boulder, CO, William (Caroline) of St. Paul, MN and Amy (Johnnie Workman) of Minneapolis, MN and their mother Laura Au-Yeung of Henderson, Nevada; as well as by four grandchildren Margaret, Sophie, Theo, and Martha.

The family hosted a private visitation in St. Paul, MN at Simple Traditions by Bradshaw. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation to your local library in honor of Dr. Edmund Au-Yeung, 1941-2024. They are planning a memorial for their father’s community in Waterloo to take place after the holidays in January. Please contact a family member for details.
