Died in hospice care at Johanna Shores in Arden Hills, MN, on Aug. 9, 2015.
Franz was born in Kattowitz, Germany on Sept. 28, 1919. In 1939, a friend was able to find him a visa that allowed him to escape Germany and sail to Manila. Shortly after his arrival, the Japanese invaded. When the Allied Forces retook Manila, Franz joined the U.S. Army. Prior to receiving his commission, Franz was granted U.S. citizenship.
Franz married Betty Eshelman in Guam on March 20, 1948. A year later, Franz gave up his commission and moved to St. Paul, Mn. Over the years, Franz had a successful career in microlithography with Buckbee Mears Co. in St. Paul, Motorola in Scottsdale, Az, and Control Data in Bloomington, Mn.
Franz was preceded in death by his parents, Else and Arthur Ucko, and sister, Marianne Ucko, victims of the holocaust; aunt, Grete Riesenfeld; son, John Ucko; wife, Betty and second wife, Ruth Holmes Ucko.
Franz is survived by his daughter, Marianne (Ross) Stone; granddaughters, Kim (Kent) Lindquist and Sarah Stone; and great-grandson, Samuel Lindquist.
Franz is also survived by friends who were tremendous care givers: Larry, Jane, Bob, Sonia, Gwen, Keith, Mary and Maggie. These were the faces and hands of Christ in the last years of Franz's life. The family is forever grateful to them.
