Age 87, of St. Paul, died Oct. 29. Born in Waukesha Co, WI, raised on a farm in Ashippun, WI. Attended Luther College (summer school), Waldorf College (1 yr of h.s. program), Northwestern Univ. (night school), B.A. from Northeastern Illinois Univ. Lived in Chicago, New Jersey, and Park Ridge, Illinois. Worked as an accountant, including as financial manager of the North Suburban Mass Transit District of Chicago. Passed the CPA exam at age 58. Was a lifelong joyful Lutheran, a humble Norwegian-American who valued frugality and simplicity, an early feminist, a soprano and a beach lover. She rejoiced in jokes and laughter, food and sweets, the kindness of dear ones, and in her last years, the staff and aides at Carondelet Village and Lyngblomsten, and her cat Blackie. She is survived by her daughter, Rev. Carol Tomer, dear cousins, and all the saints who continue their earthly journey in God's grace. Preceded in death by her husband, James Gilbert. Funeral at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 1935 St. Clair Ave., St. Paul, on Sat, Nov. 14 at 2 pm; 1 pm visitation. Burial at St. Olaf Lutheran cemetery, Ashippun, WI. Memorials suggested to Luther College (memorial tree and bench) and Pilgrim Lutheran Church.
