Joel Stephen Smeby

Joel Stephen Smeby, age 50, passed away into the loving arms of Jesus early Christmas morning. Joel was a devoted husband to his loving wife, Jenni, and a dedicated father to his precious son, Gavynn.

Joel enjoyed detailed planning of vacations and day trips taken with Jenni, Gavynn, his parents, his Aunt Doris and Uncle Kraig. Joel worked in IT for 3M for over 27 years, earning numerous certifications and became a specialist in cyber security. Joel was actively involved with scouting, earning the rank of Eagle Scout and was so proud to see Gavynn become a cub scout. Joel will be remembered for his strength of moral character, high standards, kindness, sensitivity, quiet faith, and his enduring commitment to family and friends.

Joel's family is grateful for the many prayers from all over the world that have sustained them over these past few weeks. The family also expresses sincere gratitude to the staff at Regions Hospital Floor 7S for their compassionate care for Joel.

A star (coordinates RA:19H17M6.1S DEC:+53° 22' 5.4") was named for Joel by his work group and now we can all look up at the night sky and remember our special memories of Joel.

Joel is preceded in death by grandparents, George and Norma Smeby, Milton and Opal Bang; brother, Jonathan; uncle, Kent; cousins, Tanya Asbury, Trevor Smeby, and Jonathan Lee Smeby.

He is survived by his wife, Jenni; son, Gavynn (age eight); parents, Keith and Connie; brother, Jarrett (Beth); sister-in-law, Cyndi (Tim), and niece, Ellie Clark; in-laws, Darryl and Linda Schaumburg; along with many other family and friends.

A Memorial Service for Joel will be held at 2:30PM on Saturday, December 30, 2023, at Grace Lutheran Church (1730 Old Hudson Road, St. Paul 55106). Family and friends may gather one hour prior. Fellowship with Joel's favorite foods to follow the service.
