Larry Eldon Holmberg

Larry E. Holmberg was born March 5, 1946 in Willmar, MN to Eldon and Eunice (Holmgren) Holmberg.

He grew up on a farm near Pennock, attended one-room country schools and graduated from Willmar High School in 1964. After two years at Willmar Community College (now Ridgewater) he attended the University of Minnesota, graduating with a BS in landscape architecture and an ROTC commission as a Second Lieutenant in 1969. After a year of further training he earned the rank of First Lieutenant, and served as a transportation officer on convoys delivering supplies and other military items throughout the southern part of South Vietnam. For his service he was awarded the Bronze Star.

He returned to the United States and married Linda Hanson on September 25, 1971.They lived in St. Paul while he worked as Director of Acquisition and Planning for the Ramsey County Parks Department, until they retired in Shoreview. He was an active member of Salem Covenant Church, New Brighton, for 53 years, where he also designed and cared for landscaping even into retirement. He ran six Twin Cities marathons, best time being 2:57. He was known for his quiet wit, creativity, humility, thoughtfulness and an impeccable sense of direction. After a five month battle with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), Larry passed away on January 13, 2025.

He is survived by his wife Linda and two sons, Jeff (Jennie) of Farmington and Todd of St. Paul; four grandchildren, Jaiden, Bennett, Ruby and Pearl of Farmington; a brother Bruce (Ilene) of Rush City and two sisters, Karen Horsley of Fargo and Marna (Bruce) Reigstad of Willmar. He was preceded in death by his parents and other family members.

 Celebration of Life, Thursday February 6th 2 PM with a visitation one hour prior to service at Salem Covenant Church, 2655 5th St. NW. New Brighton. We will miss his love, his humor, and gentle, Christ-like attributes. We are comforted knowing for certain he is with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We look forward to being together again, for eternity.
