Layiwola Yekini “Baba” Alabi, age 59 of St. Paul MN, passed away surrounded by family and friends, on Tuesday, Nov. 16th, 2021, after a long battle with liver cancer and its complications.
He was born on May 8th, 1962, in Lomé, Togo to Layiwola Salami and Adjidjali Kalenou. He spent his childhood between Lomé and Badou, while visiting family in Nigeria. He worked for many years as a mechanic specialized in tires and vulcanization in Lomé, Togo until he moved to the US in 2001. He lived in New York then moved to Minnesota a couple of months later.
Baba was a father to 8 kids, a husband, a brother, and a friend to many people. Although he was unable to pursue longer studies due to lack of support while growing up, he had a curious mind and valued education. He always ensured that his children were well educated. He enjoyed learning and never missed an opportunity to travel to learn about new cultures and locations. He was also an engaged member of his community and participated in politics and social developments.
He was a strong, unproblematic, and honest man who loved his friends and family unconditionally. He brought love, happiness, and comfort to the ones he loved. He always went above and beyond for people and was loved by many. Baba was a beaming light and one of the sweetest and most dedicated dads. We were blessed to have him and will miss him greatly.
Over the past year, his family grew to include 2 grandchildren that he loved and took care every day. Baba was predeceased by both his parents. He is survived by Ayele Kanyi, his wife of 25 years; children Tawa, Latif, Ossilia, Khalid, Malik, Kevin, Fadil, and David; grandchildren Jerrell and Maeva; his siblings Razaki, Koudi, Mama, Moulika, Latifa, and Baba Ibadan; Abeeb, Alira, Nassira, Madina, Leo, and Nouratou Nassirou; many relatives and friends.
