Mary Jane Fankell passed away on September 2, 2024, at the age of 95. At the time of her death, Mary was a resident of The Deerfield in New Richmond, Wi.
Mary lived and attended school in Eau Claire, She later moved to Chippewa Falls, completing high school in 1947. Mary spent most of the remainder of her life in her beloved Chippewa Falls.
Mary possessed an admirable work ethic. She worked in many capacities within the community. Working as a secretary in professional offices, a server at many hospitality establishments and as a secretary, at Halmstad Elementary and Chippewa Falls High School. She loved her secretarial positions, particularly the students and staff, who became her school family.
Mary was an active volunteer in the community. She was one of the founding members in the mentor program at Halmstad Elementary, where she served for several years. She also enjoyed delivering meals on wheels. She used to joke that she was older than many of the people she served. Finally hanging up her wheels at the age of 85.
As an active member at Central Lutheran in Chippewa Falls she grew from the liturgy and extended her faith by volunteering in several areas within the church community.
Mary’s favorite place to be was at her cabin on Bony Lake, surrounded by the family, friends and pets she loved dearly. Her legacy has continued with cherished memories and gatherings of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in that same beautiful location.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Mabel and Abel Westlund, as well as her brother Robert Westlund and great grandchildren Noah, Thomas and Timothy. She is survived by Thomas Fankell, her husband of 54 years and four children Vicki Gjovik (Tim). Timothy O’Neil, Missy O’Neil (Thomas Findlay) and Thomas O’Neil, as well as 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Those who knew Mary will remember her as an outgoing personality with a fun spirit. They will also remember her chocolate chip cookies that were the best!
The family extends their thanks to the staff at Deerfield and Lakeview Hospice for the care they provided Mary over the past two and one half years.
Mary’s Celebration of Life will be held at Central Lutheran Church in Chippewa Falls, WI on Saturday, September 28th at 11:00 with visitation one hour prior to the service. A lunch and gathering will be hosted by the family at the Leinenkugel's Lodge immediately following the interment at Forest Hill Cemetery.
Memorials will be shared with Irvine Park, the local YMCA or an organization of your choice.
