Richard Standish Stockwell
Age 91
10 September 1925 - 1 April 2017
Dick was born in Belmont, MA, the 4th of 6 children, to Dorothy and Howard Stockwell. He spent many summers with his brothers at Camp Sokokis in Maine, attended Belmont High School, joined the Marines, and studied engineering at Dartmouth and Yale while in the Marines. After graduating, he moved to Wisconsin to work for Marathon Corporation, then took a job with International Paper that brought him to Minneapolis. He courted and married Ginny Kinkead, whose family had deep roots in St. Paul. They married on June 16, 1951, and celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 2016. Dick and Ginny raised 4 children in St. Paul, who scattered across the country, much to their dismay. They also raised a collage of pets and farm animals at their family farm in Cottage Grove, and hosted many fun family picnics. Dick started his own company, Stockwell Equipment Co. (materials handling), which he ran successfully for about 30 years. As a small businessman, he was involved in and served as president of the St. Paul Rotary and MHEDA (Material Handling Dealers Association). He was also very active in his community - he was a long-time member of the 49ers Breakfast Club, Investment Club, and Topic Club; was a member of the Shriners and Royal Order of Jesters; regularly attended church and served on the vestry at Christ Church; and served on the Board of both the Salvation Army and YMCA Camp Widjiwagan and as Board Chairman of Widji. Dick enjoyed playing golf, alpine skiing, traveling the world, and spending winters in Fountain Hills, Arizona. He also enjoyed spending time with family, and organized several memorable trips and reunions, including to the Rocky Mountain National Parks; Alaska; the Riviera Maya in Mexico; and Snow Mountain Ranch in Colorado. Dick was outgoing, eternally optimistic, full of love and kindness, and provided invaluable help and guidance to his friends, children, and grandchildren over many years. He is loved and admired by his many friends and family, including his large extended family that gathers together at Keoka Lake in Waterford, Maine. He will be missed dearly but will be carried in the hearts and memories of everyone that knew him.
Dick is survived by his loving wife, Ginny Stockwell; their children Mary Lindridge of Cottage Grove, MN; Rick Stockwell of Durango, CO; Sally Stockwell of Cumberland, ME; and Dorothy Lyons of Olympia, WA; their spouses; 8 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; sister Martha Eaton of Waterford, ME; and over a hundred extended family members. The family would like to thank the Allina Hospice team - and especially Moe - for their excellent care, comfort and guidance over the past 2 A½ months. A memorial service and reception will be held at 11 am Friday, April 7, at Messiah Church, 1631 Ford Pkwy, St Paul with a visitation beginning at 10 am. Memorial donations may be made to YMCA Camp Widjiwagan, 2125 E Hennepin Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55413.
