Ryan James Richards died November 30, 2023 as a result of an explosion and fire at
his home in South St. Paul. He is survived by his mother, Ester Muñoz Richards of St.
Paul, and his father Reed Richards of Spearfish, SD. He is also survived by his siblings;
Reed Richards Jr. of St. Paul, MN, Joo Ree Chu (David) of Denver, CO, Ramsey Richards
of St. Paul, MN, Nhu Richards of Minneapolis, MN, Mai Richards of Herxheim, Germany,
Edison Richards of Rapid City, SD, and Sindy Richards of Spearfish, SD.
Ryan grew up on the family farm outside of Spearfish, SD where he learned, among
other things, to ride horses, raise chickens and search for ancient Native arrowheads
in the creek behind his house.
Ryan enjoyed collecting crystals, attending gem and mineral shows, and had a knack
for finding agates without having to look too hard. Always athletic, Ryan grew up playing
baseball and tennis, dancing tap, jazz, and ballet, wrestling, boxing and playing percussion
in the school band. He graduated from Spearfish High School in 1999 and the University of
Wyoming at Laramie in 2005 with a major in Geographic Information Systems. Ryan
lived in St. Paul for the past 18 years. There he discovered a talent for professional
painting which he pursued until his untimely death.
He practiced the spiritual works of mercy: to bear patiently those who wrong us,
to forgive offenses, to comfort the afflicted and to pray for the living and the dead.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, December 14th at 11:00 AM at Our Lady
of Guadalupe Diocesan Shrine, 401 Concord Street, Saint Paul, MN 55107 with a
