Wells, Sally Hammond

December 11,1927- June 5th, 2020

Age 92, died peacefully on Friday June 5, 2020 in St. Paul, MN. Sally was born, raised and lived in Wauwatosa, WI, daughter of the late Loring and Marion Hammond.  She was preceded in death by husband George Edward Wells, and her brother, Orrin (Buzz) Bow Hammond. She is survived by her three children, Merrick Wells (Barbara), Sarah Carroll (Patrick) and Caroline Stone (Stewart) as well as eight beloved grandsons, Patrick, James and Andrew Carroll, Merrick and Noah Wells, and Christopher, William and Jeffrey Stone.  Sally had a way of making everyone feel special and knew how to enjoy life.  Sally earned her B.A. from Wellesley College in 1950.  She volunteered for Wellesley as a lifelong endeavor serving as the President of the Milwaukee Alumnae Wellesley Club. She served on many community boards in Milwaukee including Friends of the Milwaukee Public Museum, Milwaukee chapter of Planned Parenthood, Riveredge Nature Center, Milwaukee Psychiatric Hospital, and Music for Youth. Her great love of nature led her to teach a weekly class in Nature Awareness for patients at the Milwaukee Psychiatric Hospital. She was a lifelong member of the First Congregational church of Wauwatosa where she sang in the choir.  Not only did Sally enjoy many volunteer activities, she excelled at a 20 yearlong occupation as the Director of Volunteers at the Congregational Home, a residential nursing home in Brookfield, WI.  Sally also held a part time job as a consultant for the Jacobus and Sounder Family Foundations to Jacobus Park Nature program for the handicapped.  Sally lived an inspiring life as an amputee and was often asked to give motivational speeches at church and at VA hospitals to give courage to other amputees. Her family hails her devotion to her family and friends and the organizations she served, and a life truly well lived.  As Sally would say “I love life!” Sally enjoyed nature, singing, bird watching, cooking, entertaining, and was beloved by many friends, family and neighbors.  She will be missed. Due to limitations on gatherings because of COVID-19, services will be held privately for the family. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Sally may send a contribution to the Wauwatosa First Congregational Church.  1511 Church St, Wauwatosa, WI 53213
