Samuel H. Givand, 75, formerly of Minneapolis and Cavalier, ND, died Thursday, October 15, at the Gables Care Center of Boutwell’s Landing.

Sam was born Oct. 14, 1945 to Max and Sarah Givand in New York. He grew up in Brooklyn, graduating from Brooklyn Technical High School. He met Karen Olson while a student at UND, and they were married Aug. 14, 1971 in Cavalier.

Sam was educated as a chemist at Clarkson College in New York and the University of Iowa, and received his doctorate from UND in 1973. He worked as a chemist for several years in Grand Forks and the Twin Cities until multiple sclerosis forced him to stop.

He is survived by his wife, Karen; his children, Jacob (Alison), Matthew (Sara), and Jonathan (Jennifer) Givand; nine grandchildren; and brother Theodore (Joanne) Givand. Sam was preceded in death by his parents and a grandchild.

A small family Memorial Service and Mass of Christian Burial will be held, followed by interment in St. Brigid of Ireland Catholic Cemetery in Cavalier, at a later date.
