Major Walter August Proft (USAF retired) of Saint Paul, Minnesota passed away on March 29, 2020 in Woodbury, Minnesota.
Walter was born in Mena, Arkansas to Martin and Agnes Proft on March 24, 1925. He attended school in Mena and at St. John’s Academy, Winfield, Kansas. He married Donna Lynette Stuart on July 4, 1946 in Brownsville, Tennessee. He graduated from the University of Nebraska, Omaha. In December 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp which became the United States Air Force. He retired in December 1963. He served as a district representative with Aid Association For Lutherans (a fraternal insurance company) from 1963 to 1989. He was a man of God, raised in a Christian Home and active in his church, Eastern Heights Lutheran Church, for over 50 years. He served as district president of Lutheran Hour Ministries, Minnesota South District.
Walter was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Donna; sisters, Magdalene, Ruth, and Clara; brother, Paul; and parents, Martin and Agnes.
Walter is survived by son, Donovan; daughter, Julie Gurga (Lawrence); son, Michael; son, Paul (Julie); daughter, Randi-Lyn Benson (Tom); daughter, Cynthia Lange; daughter, Christina Schwietz (David); 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
At this time and under these circumstances, the memorial service at Eastern Heights Lutheran Church and interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery will be announced in the near future.
